Fleas - Frequently Asked Questions

What Are Fleas?

Fleas are are small parasitic biting insects that feed on the blood of mammals such as cat, dogs and even humans. As they pierce the skin of their host and feed on the warm blood, this can cause allergic irritating reactions.

With over 60 varieties native to Britain, the most frequent and problematic flea infestations are down to the cat flea (Ctenocephalides canis), but we also come across dog fleas, human fleas, rabbit fleas, bird fleas, hedgehog fleas and mole fleas, but cat fleas are by far the most common.

Despite being called cat fleas, they can live on dogs and are very partial to humans too. Their larvae often live around bedding areas and feed on flakes of skin, dust, debris, dead insects and fur.

What Do Fleas Look Like?

Tiny and wingless, fleas can be as small as 1mm or as large as 8mm. They are often black or brown in colour and with powerful hind legs they can jump vast distances compared to their size to find new sources of blood or escape predators.

Their flat body shape allows them to move around fur and hair relatively easily and also means they can hide in the tiniest gaps – making detection and treatment difficult.

How Do I Know If I Have a Flea Infestation?

Common signs include pets scratching excessively, small bites on your ankles or legs, and seeing fleas jumping on carpets or furniture. You may also notice flea dirt (tiny black specks) in pet fur or bedding.

Can Fleas Live in Homes Without Pets?

Yes. While fleas are often introduced by pets, they can survive in carpets, furniture, and cracks in flooring—even in homes without animals—especially if a previous infestation was not fully treated.

Are Flea Bites Dangerous?

Yes. While fleas are often introduced by pets, they can survive in carpets, furniture, and cracks in flooring—even in homes without animals—especially if a previous infestation was not fully treated.

Why Do Fleas Keep Coming Back?

Fleas have a life cycle that includes eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Eggs can remain dormant and hatch weeks later, which is why infestations often reappear without professional treatment.

How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Fleas?

Most infestations can be controlled within a few weeks, but you may notice flea activity for a short time after treatment as eggs hatch. Follow-up treatments may be required in more severe cases.

Do I Need to Treat My Pets as Well?

Yes. Treating your home without treating your pets can lead to reinfestation. We recommend using vet-approved flea treatments alongside professional pest control.

Is Flea Treatment Safe for Children and Pets?

Yes. We use professional products that are safe when applied correctly. Your technician will provide clear guidance on any precautions to take before and after treatment.

Can I Get Rid of Fleas Myself?

DIY treatments often fail to eliminate the entire life cycle, especially eggs and larvae hidden deep in carpets and furnishings. Professional treatment is usually the most effective and long-lasting solution.
