How to know if you have a mouse infestation

If you have mice in your house then after dark (mice are generally nocturnal) you may hear scampering feet above your ceiling or inside your cavity walls. The first signs may be that you discover mouse droppings or gnawed boxes in the kitchen, loft or garage. Another sign you have mice can be the distinctive odour that mice emit.

Each case is different, so in the first instance we will do a mice removal survey to determine:

  • why you have the infestation in the first place
  • what is the be way to eradicate the infestation
  • what do we have to do to stop future infestations

All types of mice have the potential to bring infection and destruction into your home.

Description of a mouse:

  • Size  – body 5-7cm (2-3 inches), tail 7-10cm (3-4 inches). The tail is longer than the body. Ears – large
  • Droppings – black, rice grain size and shape
  • Damage – gnawing cables, woodwork, cardboard and plastic.
  • Food – will eat pretty much anything available
  • Sounds – gnawing and scratching
  • Active – mainly at night

Many people have phobias against the tiny house mouse, often it’s down to their quick, unpredictable movements. Some fear how easily they can hide and travel around the house and for others it’s just how unhygienic they are.

Distribution of mice

Mice (Mus musculus) are classed as commensal rodents, which means they ‘live off man’s table”. Basically, they are here because we are here, they live in our properties, sharing our food and shelter. House mice primarily feed on plant matter, but they will also eat dairy products and meat. They don’t drink much water as they need so little moisture it can be obtained through their food. Disgustingly, they will eat their own droppings to get extra nutrients produced by bacteria in their guts!

Mice contaminate far more food than they consume and they are capable of carrying many diseases, particularly food poisoning. The average mouse sheds 70 droppings in 24 hours and urinates constantly.

Life cycle of mice

As the most common rodent pest in the world, a female house mouse can give birth to up to a dozen babies every three weeks. That’s 150 babies a year! Each of these female babies become sexually mature at 6 weeks. They breed at an extraordinary rate and from a breeding pair, in the right conditions, you could end up with up to a thousand mice !

House mice mainly live in houses and are most often found in the wall cavities, loft spaces, under floor boards and under kitchen worktops. However, they are so adaptable and climb so well they can be found virtually anywhere. They breed throughout the year and often share nests with their “relatives”.

They can be very discreet when numbers are low, but can very easily take over your home.
