How do I know if I have rats?

    • Burrows that appear to be 6-9 cm in diameter. They might be located near to a food source.
    • Tracks covering walls, banks or hedges. Rats remember their routes and use the same paths to and from their nest.
    • You may see odd smear marks along stone, wood or metal.
    • You can see their droppings which are between 15 and 20 mm long, cylindrical, flat at one end and often pointed at the other.
    • You may notice damage to packaging or doors and fences.

What damage can a rat infestation cause?

Rats can damage property by gnawing at wood, electrical wiring, water pipes, and drainage systems. At least 20% of household fires can be attributed to rodents gnawing through electrical cables – which is often not covered by insurance policies. Due to the damage that they cause it is important seek professional advice to get rid of rats as soon as possible.

    What can attract rats?

Rats like somewhere that there is food available to them. Be sure to keep on top of your rubbish areas both inside and outside the home. Be aware of outdoor rat attractors like bird tables or keeping chickens.

They are always on the look-out for somewhere to hide, so within your house and garden areas be sure not to provide them with places to nest. Old vehicles and old furniture are regular culprits. They also like warmth and water, so fix leaks and be sure to check-up on garages and washing/hose areas. You can read our blog here about "Unexpected things that attract rats"

Causes of a rat infestation that are beyond your control

Often a rat infestation can be caused by factors beyond your control. We see this often in Essex and the surrounding towns we cover like Basildon, Southend and Chelmsford. It can be due to local human intervention, such as building or construction noise.  Temperature can also have a big role. As the temperatures get cooler in winter rats seek new shelter. The past couple of winters have seen very low temperatures. An increase in predators can also have an impact.

    How quickly do rats breed?

Dependant on the weather and food sources, rats can take between 2-3 months to reach sexual maturity and can have up to 7 litters per year with the average litter size being about 8. From just one pair of breeding rats, over 1,000 rats could be produce via themselves and offspring in a year!
